Red Flag Detectors #2: The One Where We Aren't Sure How Much & When to Share Our Stories.
This week I launched the new season of the Untangled Faith podcast.
KJ Ramsey joined me for the first episode and I couldn’t be more excited. Like I say in the voice-over, the interview was inevitable. I first asked her to be on the podcast over a year ago. My plan was to have KJ and her husband, Ryan, on the podcast together.
But she wasn’t in a season of doing interviews.
And so, I interview Ryan without her. (KJ was busy finishing up edits on her book)
I didn’t know it at the time, but that was Ryan’s first time on a podcast. That podcast was so well-received and coincided with a time when Ryan was sharing his own writing more publicly.
You can read Ryan’s work here.
While this episode was KJ’s turn to share her own voice, it’s impossible to miss the fact that their story of spiritual abuse was “their” story. In order to share it publicly, they both needed to be at a point where they were comfortable with what was shared and the timing of sharing those details.
That’s how it is with a lot of us, right?
The tricky part of telling our story is that it often isn’t just “ours”.
That wasn’t all we talked about. We also talked about whether or not speaking about painful situations that happen in the church is just airing dirty laundry, we talked about how the idea of a “good” shepherd seems like an impossible dream to too many folks and why she used Psalm 23, anyway, as the scaffolding of her new book, The Lord is My Courage.
If you haven’t listened, grab a cup of coffee, sit down, and join us as we chat. Or, lace up your shoes, pop in your earbuds and head out the door and push “play” and let us join you on your walk. Here’s the link again: link
You’ll probably notice, as you listen, that I have some advertising that I’m using to help support the podcast. I’m doing my best to bring in enough to cover the costs of producing the podcast and I’m really, really close to that goal. Once I reach that goal, it would be nice if I could have compensation for time spent on this. Currently, I don’t. The many hours I put into this actually costs more than I bring in.
If you want to help support the show here are some easy ways to do so:
