If you want to skip right to catching the two episodes I’ve published now that I’m “back,” you can find those here. I’ll talk more about those episodes here.
In April this year, I announced that I was shutting down the Untangled Faith podcast. It wasn’t something I decided lightly. I felt like what I was doing was unsustainable for several reasons.
I was exhausted.
I was adjusting to sending my first kid to college and thinking about sending another one soon.
I wanted to pursue getting a job that paid me (I am so thankful to folks who financially supported the podcast. They helped me to break even with my expenses most months and gave me a tiny bit extra every once in a while).
I wasn’t sure I loved the format of the show.
So, I made the decision to stop. I did it without a long landing strip. I just stopped.
I found a part-time contract job, we survived the first year of college for our oldest, we took a few trips, and I kept thinking about how I missed podcasting. So, I went through an entire consulting process with someone who helped me think through a new concept for a podcast.
I recorded some audio (I’ll share it at some point), and I created a trailer and shared it. I made plans to launch this new rebranded podcast on October 1. But, after the trailer was released, I got an email from someone concerned that the new name of my podcast infringed on her work and decided to rethink the entire thing.
I didn’t want to get into a legal battle over something I was just starting. So, I took down the trailer and went back to the drawing board. I decided what I really wanted to do was to relaunch Untangled Faith, but to do it a little differently this time.
So what’s different?
I still want to offer community and encouragement to people who have been hurt, confused, and disillusioned in their Christian faith, but I want to lean more into what it looks like to untangle different areas: politics, finances, church, marriage. . .
Maybe that sounds like what I’ve been doing all along, but I think you’ll notice a difference as you listen to this first season on faith and politics.
Have I solved all the issues that caused me to quit?
Mostly. I’m less tired, I’ve figured out how to be a parent to a kid at college, and I’m changing up the podcast format. What I haven’t quite figured out yet is the income thing. I just wrapped up that part-time job last week and would love to figure out a way to bring in some income because we’ll soon have 2 in college.
That’s a lot of words to tell you I’m back.
I’ll wrap this up by letting you know I’m so grateful for each of you.
Amy
P.S. I’ll be on the podcast next week with my husband and we’ll be talking about how our politics look different than they did when we got married 21 years ago. I’d love to hear in the comments if you’ve seen shifts in your life.
Some books I’ve been reading (affiliate links):
The Small and the Mighty: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, from the Founding to the Civil Rights Movement by Sharon McMahon (Queen of the Governerds)
The Ballot and the Bible: How Scripture Has Been Used and Abused in American Politics and Where We Go From Here by Kaitlyn Schiess
I stumbled onto your podcast recently and loved your throwback with Kaitlyn Scheiss. Just listened to your podcast conversation with your husband about how your politics have changed. Thank you. I wish more believers would untangle from the GOP and this ridiculous culture war.
I’m so glad you’re back! I’ve missed your voice and your insights. It’s so good that you got to have a reset and remember what you loved about this space. Praying the financial piece works itself out soon! (Just realized the way that last sentence sounded with an unfortunate homophone! Unintended!)
